Am I judged by others irresponsibility?

Been looking for an apartment (and yes, I have another article) and have found that no one wants a dog in their place because it would make a mess and I would not take care of it, etc. I have NEVER been an irresponsible pet owner, but yet I am judged by the bad behavior of others..this has always been unfair. I understand the concerns as there are always people who don't take care of their own pets or cleaning, etc. but I am NOT those people! So, my apartment/house to rent search continues as my time runs out quickly..Guessing we'll be living in my vehicle...

Thanks hollerlady...I appreciate the note and am encouraged by your thoughts on this...I guess if one can do it, others can too...Some are quite strict on their places, but I am sure others can be worked with..Just trying to find some place that is available now and what I can afford. There are places that not only charge an extra security, but also monthly charges for having a pet. I think this is excessive and I refuse that whole idea, but yours is a very open and generous way of handling things. I would be willing to work with someone on those terms... Still I search though and hoping I find something before our time here runs out! Thanks for your help

Just a word to encourage you--we are landlords for two rental homes in the country, and we allow pets with an additional month's security deposit, and a provision in the lease stating the renter will be responsible for any pet damage. We do a run through inspection initially, making notes and taking pictures of the property. Then after one month we do a visual inspection--if there is any pet damage, the renter must make immediate repairs or the lease is cancelled. If this sounds harsh to you, we tried it by using an honor system, and the property was damaged. This unfortunately is the way of things. Maybe you could suggest such a provision to a prospective landlord and he/she would be willing to work with you. We have five dogs and two cats, of which three are indoor animals--we love them and know pets owners are usually compassionate people. Do you have letters of reference from former landlords? Good luck to you and your old friend.

Thanks again to all who have offered help...I am getting so discouraged and disgusted that I just don't know what to do anymore...and my time is still ticking...I wonder if everyone who has looked for a rent on limited time AND with a pet has gone through this disaster?? My dog is 10+ years old and sleeps 90% of her time..doesn't do anything! Is there no pet lovers out there who would allow another to have a roof over their heads??? GEEZ!

I suggested approaching the owner or manager directly. Some of the "complexes" have blanket policies re: pets. I know if I was an owner I would be willing to negotiate (in these tuff economic times)

There is an apartment complex on the corner of James and Anson. Somebody told me they may have an empty apartment. I don't know who owns that or if they accept pets. Maybe, if you drive by it, you could see if one of them is posted for rent and it has a number to call. Good luck to you.

Geez, with all the places and help I have received, still, no one wants to talk to me about renting anything b/c of my having pets..This is discrimination at it's finest! I'm beginning to wonder just how anyone WITH pets lives without buying????

THANKS! I will try anything..time running out for me and someone, who is more interested in making money than a person and dog living on the streets seems to be what I am up against? I'll definitely try Chuck..Someone around here told me about another guy who owns a place in town and I am trying for that too...SOMETHING has got to work out sometime.. THANK YOU ALL!

moodus, did the leads in Middlebourne not pan out? Try calling 304-758-4032 or 4058. The landlords allow pets, if they have anything open.

Moodus I am a pet lover and I can understand both ends of the pets and rental situation. It would be nice if we (and our pets) were judged on an individual basis. I can't see why an owner just wouldn't just charge an additional deposit if pets were involved. It would make good business sense. If the owner charged an additional deposit, (1) they would be protecting the investment(2) they would be renting a unit that previously was unoccupieed. I wish you and your pets the very best in finding a residence. BTW, have you approached perscpective landlords and asked to be judged on an indivdual basis? You will probably have better luck with a private owner, rather than a complex that just has a stupid blanket policy regarding pets.
