Brooklyn Section
Posts: 239 Category: Wetzel Community Board
There must be something done to clean up the Brooklyn section of town. The town or the county must step in. Apparently the people are unable or unwilling to keep up the neighborhood. There is no shame in being on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum. The shame is "your place looks like a dump". It wasn't always in the poor state of repair that it's in now. How would we like "that area" as a postcard for for town? It has to stop. Is there anything that can be done? view post
The New CVB and YOU!

I sort of started this thread in the Brooklyn thread and decided that I'd better not hijack an important thread like that one. We were talking about tourism for Wetzel county. I know, I can hear some giggles about that, but it's serious. 5 or 6 years ago people in Elkins and Weston and several other cities in WV were doing the same thing...giggling! Now, everyone loves the jobs, the businesses and the people tourism brings to those areas. Tourism did that. Tourism got everybody looking at the area as a new visitor. Tourism got everybody thinking of things that tourists might like to do, see and maybe even pay for. So, let's talk about Wetzel county and tourism. Dennis view post
Kids these days and there cell phones!!
Posts: 7 Category: Wetzel Community Board
This has been bothering me for awhile kids and their phones!! Kids text way to much and they have no communication skills.. I think its good for kids to have phones for emergencies or if the parents have to get ahold them ,but for kids to set for hours and txt is un called for. I know i was a gulity parent not to long ago about letting my child have complete control of their phone and not setting limits on how much time they r txting.I think parents need to check what their chidern r txting and sending on their phones.I know all of this texting is not good for theses childern ther is so much drama between kids now a days because of the phones for example someone might text something and the other person can take it completey the wrong way because they can't hear the tone they r using and another is all the forwarding texts .. i could go on forever. I know my child had their phone taken away for a week or two and thay were about ready to nuts because no one calls each other anymore!! view post
Close Encounters of the Wetzel Kind
Posts: 37 Category: Wetzel Community Board
After reading through these threads thoroughly it has become apparent that there are quite a few long term residents of the county. I've heard several stories involving the unexplained in Wetzel County and the surrounding area. My Grandfather worked at Ormet for years and told me of one instance coming home from the night shift and seeing the entire valley become illuminated from the Rt. 180 hill. He wasn't sure what caused it, but he always seemed to think it was a UFO. It could have been a tall tale designed for a grandson's ear, but he always seemed to wholeheartedly believe it and he was a man of true integrity. Anyone else see this in the 80's? Any other interested tales of wonder? view post
Wetzel Oldtimers: Fred Lou
Posts: 22 Category: Wetzel Community Board
I have a question for Wetzel County Oldtimers. When I was a kid my parents spoke of "Fred Lou". Apparently Fred Lou was a man of color who lived in the basement of the Wetzel County Courtouse. I vaguely remembers this, I am post 50! Can anyone of our beloved oldtimers tell me the tale of Fred Lou. view post
Make Parents Held Accountable
Posts: 29 Category: Wetzel Community Board
Just recently, several students at Magnolia High School were caught with prescription drugs leading to the accidental overdose of one who required prompt medical attention. The Wetzel County Board of Education stated by law, they must provide "Alternative Education" for those who were involved. Why should we the taxpayers be held liable to provide personal transportation to the students who willfully broke the laws by bringing and dispersing drugs on school property? The Wetzel County Board of Education is providing a school bus to make special trips to pick up the students who were found guilty of violating the laws. The parents should be responsible for their childs transportation as well as the cost of paying for the "Altenative Education", not the taxpayers! view post

Okay, before I say anything else, I will say this...IF YOU WANT A DOG, THEN WHY NOT MAKE IT A PART OF THE FAMILY AND NOT AN OBJECT TO LEAVE OUTSIDE???? I speak of the dog that lays (constantly) in the doorway of what used to be the Yacht Club on Main Street. It looks to be a Black Lab type dog that was rolled in a ball as to keep warm in this horrible weather..Too many times people get an animal on a snap decision or take it b/c their child wants a puppy..If you do this, make the commitment and if you cannot make that life long commitmet to this animal, then do NOT get one. Too many end up as this dog does or in far worse conditions.. I now offer the opening for conversation to the owner of this dog..would love to see what their side of this story is. Thank you... view post
WE ARE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF N.M.

Are the citizens of New Martinsville not worthy of working for the community in which they reside? Recently, the former Street Commissioner Gary Lemons retired, and passed this position on to his cousin Gary Willy. Under City Policy, the hiring of relatives in the same department is prohibited, and furthermore, it states that any and all department heads are required to live within city limits. Mr. Willy lives in Tyler County, and is provided with a city vehicle for his own personal transportation. This is nothing more than a family owned and operated business, because the entire street department is related, and not one of them reside within our community. Wake up people and help put an end to these abuses which we the citizens have to pay for! view post

Put Your Foot Down...Speedway Rip Off!
Posts: 17 Category: Wetzel Community Board
I wouldn't even spend my time on this post, but this kind of thing happens all the time at Speedway Gas... The other day I go into the store to grab a refreshment. I notice their Monster beverages were on sale 2 drinks for $5.00. I then notice the individual cost of these drinks: $2.39. I grab one and take it to the counter. The worker begins to ring my beverage up and I tell her that there is a problem with the sale as I can buy two indivuals drinks for $4.78. I brought this to the worker's attention in the hope that she would say something to the effect of "Oh, I'll tell my manager". Instead, she tells me that she "just works here". Is this Speedway's attempt at ripping off a population that they assume may have poor math skills? Even if this is a simple mistake wouldn't it make sense to correct the mistake as soon as possible? Also, snuff users, check the expiration date of the product as you may end up with 2 year old dip and will be stuck with s view post

Town & Country Day Requests
Posts: 1 Category: Wetzel Community Board
Last year the Oak Ridge Boys tore it up at T&C days. The place was packed and even as a youngster (<30) I thought it was great to see country music legends. As much as I like country, I'd like to see T & C days shake it up a little. Give us a little rock n roll please. Something akin to Derek Trucks Band or Gov't Mule. Heck, Marshall Tucker Band would be awesome and they played the Mannington Fair a few years ago. Any other ideas? view post
Please don't slice my baloney
Posts: 75 Category: Wetzel Community Board
I went into a local market several months ago to get some baloney from the deli. A mortician who moonlights at the store sliced my baloney. I became upset because I did not think this was appropriate, but I didn't want to hurt the person's feeling. I took the meat home and tried to eat it. I began thinking about what the person did before he sliced the baloney and I began to gag. I threw the baloney away. Needless to say, I'll never go back to that store. view post
Vote out family and corruption
Posts: 87 Category: Wetzel Community Board
Several months ago, my neighbor had sent mayor Lucille Blum a letter of concern regarding the ilegall hiring of the New Martinsville Street Commissioner. This man is not a citizen of New Martinsville or Wetzel County. He resides in Tyler County and is furnished with a city vehicle at the taxpayers expense. His latest act of abuse came when he removed the license plate from the city backhoe, and had taken it to his residence in Tyler County for six months, and used it for personal and monetery gain. This equipment was purchased by us, the citizens of New Martinsville, and it is meant to be used for the purpose of maintaining our community, not someones farm in Tyler County! Remember, election time is coming and we need to vote out those who abuse the citizens trust. view post
