Wetzel County Commission Contributes To Operation Be Kind

June 3, 2020
Wetzel Chronicle

The Wetzel County Commission recently made a generous donation to the City of New Martinsville's "Operation Be Kind" program. Commissioners Larry Lemon, Lisa Heasley and Greg Morris unanimously voted to give financial aid to the food distribution program in late April. Additional funding was provided by Blue Racer Midstream and Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union.

Be Kind began in March with a donation from US Pipeline. "The goal of the program is to distribute as much food to as many people as we can." Stated City Recorder, Kim Whiteman. "There are no guidelines or questions asked. We rely completely on people contacting us for themselves or for others."

Nearly 800 paper bags full of nonperishable food items such as canned fruits and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, jelly, peanut butter, canned meats, pudding, spaghetti sauce, pasta, and more have been distributed throughout Wetzel County. The bags have been delivered by numerous volunteers.

In addition to the individual bags being handed out, hundreds of pounds of food have been donated to the Wetzel County Committee on Aging, Helping Hands, Open Door Ministries and the food bank in Paden City. Witschey's gift certificates have also been purchased for distribution.

"I am so very proud of this program and the people that have been involved" stated Mayor Steve Bohrer. "The County Commission really went above and beyond with their donation. The collaboration between the City of New Martinsville and the Wetzel County Commission demonstrates that we are all working towards the betterment of all our communities."
