Anderson Orthodontics Announces 15th Annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back

October 16, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

(New Martinsville, WV) - In an effort to promote a safe and healthy Halloween for children, Anderson Orthodontics (Anissa Anderson, DDS, MS) will buy back the candy that young trick-or-treaters collect.

Candy may be brought to Anderson Orthodontics at 80 McEldowney Avenue in New Martinsville on November 1 through the 18. Collection hours are Monday 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anderson Orthodontics will pay $2 for each pound of Halloween treats collected. Monies distributed will be matched by Anderson Orthodontics and then donated to Open Door Ministries. The candies collected will be sent to the US Troops serving in the Middle East.

"Halloween is a fun holiday for kids of all ages," said Dr. Annisa Anderson of Anderson Orthodontics. "However, too much candy can contribute to tooth decay. People who wear braces should avoid sticky, chewy, and hard candy as they can cause harm to their braces and may lengthen their orthodontic treatment."

Dr. Anderson recommends that children and adults who wear braces avoid snacks such as caramel, nuts, hard candy, licorice, taffy, jelly beans, and chewing gum. She also advises patients to steer away from hard candy, pretzels, popcorn (especially unpopped kernels), and taco chips.

"Soft candies like chocolate or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties are acceptable in moderation." she said. "In addition, regular brushing and flossing are essential parts of good dental care for everyone, but especially for those who wear braces."

During October, which is National Orthodontic Health Month, members of the American Association of Orthodontics are conducting a wide range of activities to educate the public and their patients about protecting their teeth during Halloween and are sharing information about the benefits of orthodontic treatment. This is the tenth anniversary of the observance.
