Spotlight: HHS’ Mahalah Britton

July 10, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

This weeks Spotlight is on Hundred Girls Basketball standout Mahalah Britton. Mahalah is about 6' and came into her own last season where she was a forse in the paint blocking shots and pullinjg double-digit rebounds every game. Her foul shooting and her inside game got better and better each game, and was close to double-digits almost every week.

She is a coaches dream. She pays attention and gives everything she has game-after-game, and practice-after-practice. She looks like she can hold her own with the best of them. The only thing that gets her in trouble, is that she gets into foul trouble. If she can control herself and cut down the bad fouls, she should post outstanding numbers that are out of the way for many, a triple-double.

The Wetzel Chronicle asked her a few questions to let people get to know her a little better. Below are the questions that the sports staff asked and her answers:

Hundred’s Mahalah Britton is in the Sports Spotlight this week.

What expectations do you have of yourself as a player, and what do you expect from your coach? I expect myself to do my best in every game and every practice that I attend. I expect my coach to be uplifting and helpful. He/she should always be willing to talk with us, and help in stressful game situations. What have you learned about teamwork from being on the team? We all need to not one up each other, and just play basketball. We all should trust each other and our physical basketball skills. How does the team make you a better player? They help me with scoring and assists. Without them, i couldn't rank up the points in games. They also help with keeping me calm in a game. What foods do you have to give up when you're in training? I usually give up basic junk foods, and candies. What words of advice or encouragement do they have to share with younger athletes? Keep trying and practicing. I didn't think i could get where i'm at now. If you keep working your hardest, you can achieve your goals. What coaches, teacher or other people have been great influences in your life and why or how? Kasey Sapp, Hannah Evans, and my Momma have all been great influences. They all pushed me to do my best when I wanted to give up. What one word or phrase do you want people to associate with your name? I want people to associate my name with the word Determined. I want people to know that i've worked hard to be where i'm at now. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player in the sport(s) you play? My strengths are keeping the teams heads up, and keeping them going. I also can score a good amount of points for the team. My weaknesses are getting overly mad and fouling out. I also get down on myself a lot, too. What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more enjoyable for you? I like when the team and coaches go out to eat somewhere nice after our last game and just all have a bonding moment. What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more stressful and less enjoyable? When i make a mistake in a game, i know i made that mistake and then my coaches yell at me for it.

I know i've made that mistake, and i know they know that, too. In the bus ride home after the game do you like to talk about the game, or would you rather wait till later or the next day? I like to wait to talk about the game. Normally i am upset with myself after games, and would like to calm down. What are your goals for your team next season in both basketball and track, and how do you plan on achieving your team goals? My goal for the team is to win more games this year. I want all of us to trust one another. I want us to be able to move the ball around, and get open shots. We all need to work on the off season and out of summer practices. If only two or three are working out of practices, we aren't gonna get better as a team. What is something about you that most people don't know? I used to completely despise basketball. I couldn't stand to watch it. What would you like to see, sports wise at your school that you don't have already? I would love to see the football team win many games this season. I also would like to see the girls team win a tournament game. If you could change a rule or school policy, what would it be and why? I would like to have a longer lunch time. By the time everyone gets through the lunch line, there's like 10 minutes left. Who is your favorite collegiate or professional sports hero? I think Stephen Curry would be my sports hero. He's one of the best basketball players. He's not just all about basketball, but about God as well. He's involved in charities, as well. He's a great man all around.
