BOE Recognizes State Social Studies Fair and State Track Winners

The Wetzel County Board of Education, at its May 28 meeting, recognized West Virginia State Social Studies Fair Winners and West Virginia State Track Winners. New Martinsville School Student Jessa Anderson received second place in Division 1, World History with "Captured Yet Courageous." Kadyn McClure received second place in Division 2, State and Local Studies with "What Caused the Farmington Mine No. 9 Disaster?" Elin McGuire received third place in Division 1, Anthropology, "Under the Fire of Ponmpeii." Long Drain Student Kayla Aracich received second place in Division 3, State and Local Studies with "Who is She? The Jane Doe of Wetzel County." Paden City student Grace Greene received second place in Division 1, State and Local Studies with "Under the Big Top."

Also, Mady Winters received first place in the girls Shot Put and first place in the girls Discus Throw. Pat Mirandy received first place in the boys 400 Meter Dash. Spencer Shepard received first place in the boys 800 Meter Run. Jakob Barrows received first place in the boys Shot Put.

Superintendent Ed Toman recognized Shane Highley on his approval as the Superintendent of Tyler County. Toman thanked him for his soon to be three years they have worked together. Toman stated he was hired after he came in.

He wished Highley the best and said they currently have a good relationship which will continue while in his position as Superintendent of Tyler County Schools. Toman noted he is proud of all Highley has done and he appreciates all of his work. Toman expressed he will be missed, but they will move forward.

Highley stated he has enjoyed his time in Wetzel County and is thankful for all the people and everything they've done.

Discussion was also held regarding the work being done at the field house at Valley High School and the Hundred High School field house. The board is trying to resolve some issues in getting the work completed.

Brian Jones then gave a maintenance report. In addition to this, he gave the board the 2019 fire marshall report to approve and also a copy of the 2018-2019 board of risk report. Lastly, he gave the board a report showing where they try to meet the need of the personnel and students at each of their facilities.

Personnel Matters: Retirements: Brent J. Croasmun, acceptance of retirement from positions as Driver's Education Teacher and Special Education Teacher at Paden City High School, effective the end of the 2018-2019 School year.

Resignations: Abram S. Highley, acceptance of resignation from position as Assistant Superintendent effective June 30, 2019. Stephanie Goodnight, acceptance of resignation from position as Social Studies Teacher at Long Drain School, effective June 13, 2019.
