Pilots Take Care of Tigers

The River Softball team scored three runs in the home half of the sixth inning to break-up a 3-3 deadlock and defeat the Shadyside Tigers, 6-4, in the Lady Pilots' home opener, held March 26 in Sardis.

Shadyside took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on two hits and two River errors.

However, the Dave Wright-led Lady Pilots tacked on a pair of their own when Riley Lollathin opened with a walk, stole second, and hustled around to score on a Lyndsey Huffman bunt. Livi Rose reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Katie Rufener botched hit to tie things up at 2-2.

Shadyside took the lead in the top of the third on a stand-up double by Syd Destifanes. She scored off a Kylie Baker single.

However, the Pilots got to Shadyside pitcher Izi Swords to knot the game at 3-3 when Rose opened with a double, sacrificed to third by Rufener, and scored on a Katie Lively ground-out.

Lively, who started from the circle for the Pilots, set down the opponents in order in both the fifth and sixth innings to give the Pilots a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Elizabeth McConn drilled a one-out single before Huffman singled for the second time. McConn scored on a Candace Caldwell single to take a two-run lead. However, the Pilots added an insurance run when Rose pounded a single that scored Caldwell.

Shadyside opened the seventh with a single that scored off a Destifanes double, but a hard drive was grabbed by Rose at short to end the game.

"We hit the ball when we had to. We moved runners up with the small game and manufactured a couple of runs," Wright added after the game. "We spotted them two unearned runs right off the bat, but the girls battled back."

For the Lady Pilots, Lollathin, Huffman and Rose each singled and doubled, with Lollathin and Rose both driving in a run. Lively smacked a pair of singles to lead the River 10-hit attack. In addition, Caldwell and McConn each added RBI singles.

For the Lady Tigers, Baker drilled three singles to pace the Tigers, while Destifanes smacked a pair of doubles. Swords singled and doubled with each knocking in a run.

Swords took the loss from the circle, struck-out two and walked just as many, while the Pilots' Lively picking up the home opener win with two strike-outs and didn't walk a batter.
