Students Participate In American Math Competition

April 3, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

Thirty students from Magnolia High School recently participated in the 70th Annual American Mathematics Competition (AMC). The contest was held Thursday, February 7 at Magnolia High School. The test is sponsored nationally by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Math and locally by the Magnolia Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary. The AMC is an intense 75-minute, 25 question multiple-choice, non-calculator active exam that recognizes and challenges the best mathematics students in the United States. There is no formal study preparation. Test-takers rely only on the skills and knowledge learned from their high school math classes.

The top three scorers comprise the representative team from Magnolia High School. This year's top scorers were Josh Rice, first place; Spencer McCardle, second place; and third place, Jared Kocher. Rice was also Magnolia High School's 2018 AMC first place winner. He is a junior enrolled in PreCalculus and AP Calculus. Last month he was first place winner at 2019 Wetzel County Math Field Day.

McCardle is a junior in PreCalculus and Honors Trigonometry. He placed sixth at 2019 Wetzel County Math Field Day. Both young men will attend Regional Math Field Day in April.
