MHS’ Winters Named Athlete of the Week

March 13, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

This week is the last week for the winter sports season's "Athlete of the Week" feature, and this week's title couldn't have gone to a more deserving person than the Magnolia Blue Eagles' Mady Winters.

Against Trinity at the state tournament, Winters set a new single-game scoring record with 45 points in 20-of-23 attempts and 5-of-8 from the free throw line, while hauling down a dozen rebounds.

In doing so, she not only broke the existing scoring record held by former Blue Eagle standout Mallory Chapman (43), but she also picked up her 1,000th career point - all in her sophomore year.

The Wetzel Chronicle's sports department had asked Mady, when she was still in middle school, about her basketball expectations. She had said she wanted to break all her brother, Mark's, records. Indeed she will.

The Wetzel Chronicle will continue its "Athlete of the Week" and "Athlete of the Month" features during the spring sports season.

Remember, if you have an athlete you think deserves either of these titles, please contact the Wetzel Chronicle at 304-455-3300, or e-mail bcrawford@wetzelchronicle.com

Only athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley are eligible to win the Athlete of the Week and Month titles, plus they can only be named such once, until they reach tournament play.
