Doing Better

January 23, 2019
Wetzel Chronicle

During the Jan. 18 Wetzel County Oil & Gas Task Force meeting, several area residents had expressed frustration with industry-related traffic. One individual, a bus driver, became emotional as he spoke of his fears for the precious cargo he transports to and from school each day.

Many of the residents at Friday's meeting claim many industry workers are driving aggressively, speeding, and not obeying school curfews. Combined with driving large trucks on deteriorated country roads, residents see this as a recipe for disaster.

We agree, there are aggressive drivers on both sides - community residents and oil and gas employees.

Also, we would be remiss if we didn't note the good the industry has done in the area. Several companies have invested in the community with donations to various organizations, and they also serve as job providers.

The oil and gas industry has progressed here in Wetzel County for several years now, and it seems like it will endure for years to come. The complaints from area residents are not at all new, but there doesn't seem to be any solution or alleviation to these concerns.

We don't know all of the answers, but we are appreciative for the task force. It provides a platform for these important discussions, so everyone can work toward making Wetzel County a positive place in which to live and work.
