River Starts Season Strong

December 5, 2018

The River Pilots' Lauren Flannery scored a season-high 31 points, that included a long range bonus bomb, but it wasn't enough to get past the Bellaire Big Reds on Dec. 1 inside the R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

The Big Reds were up only by seven points after eight minutes of play, but Bellaire got hot in the second stanza and padded their lead to 11-25 before the Pilots trimmed their deficit to single digits with a mini run with a little under four minutes remaining in the first half.

However, the Big Reds turned up the heat and took a 26-point lead into intermission.

Flannery scored a dozen markers in the third period, including a 12-1 run to cut into their deficit, but Bellaire answered right back with a 8-0 run to go back in front by 20.

Flannery paced the 2-1 Lady Pilots with 31 points, but no other Pilot scored in double figures. Alli Long followed with five points, while Riley Lollathin, Candace Caldwell, Emily Smith and Jonayah Moeller each tallied four points, while Mikenzie Cieszeski and Livi Rose each sank a three-ball

The Big Reds were led by Maci Crozier with a game-high 32 points, while Michaela Fluharty and Katrinna Davis scored 20 and 19 points, respectively.

The Pilots will look to get back into their winning ways Dec. 6 when they host Linsly with the junior varsity game set to tip-off at 6 p.m.

Lady Pilots Cage Bulldogs, 75-29

The River Pilots picked up their second straight win by going to a 29-2 first quarter run and never looked back in handing the Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs a 75-29 defeat in the Pilots' home-opener on Nov. 29 inside RL Potts Gymnasium.

Candace Caldwell opened the flood gates with a three-ball and tallied 10 of her 12 points in the period to get the Lady Pilots going. The Bulldogs couldn't get the ball to their side of the floor with an all-out man-to-man full court pressure that helped propel the lead.

After going on a quick 11-0 run in the first two minutes, Pilots head coach Rick Isaly substituted four girls in and took four out, keeping them fresh and hungry. The Pilots' point guard Lauren Flannery was passing out assists like they were candy and finally put up two baskets to help extend the lead to 24-0 with a little over two minutes remaining in the opening period.

Emily Smith knocked down the last two baskets for the Pilots, while Jaren Tucker swished the Bulldogs' only basket of the period.

Five different Pilots scored buckets in the second period with Riley Lollathin leading the way with seven points, including a long triple to help River take a 50-14 lead into the locker room.

The Pilots didn't full court their visitors after halfway through the first quarter and used nine different players in the first period and 13 in the second period, playing man-to-man and zone from there on out.

Bridgeport scored on 17 points in the second period and held the Lady Pilots to only nine points in the third and for good measure scored 16 in the final period to get the 75-29 win.

Flannery led all-scorers with 16 points, while picking up a double-double dish out 10 assists. She also added four steals and five rebounds in limited playing time. Caldwell and Lollathin each scored an even dozen, while Katie Straub netted eight points. Ali Long scored seven points and brought down double-digit rebounds with 14, also in limited playing time.

Carsyn Reynolds and Mikenzie Cieszeski each posted six markers, while Rilyn Haught added a deuce for all the River scoring.

Lady Pilots Defeat Seminoles In Season-Opener, 55-44

WOODSFIELD - Lauren Flannery opened the River Pilots' 2018-2019 girls basketball season in a good way, scoring 25 points to help carry River to a 55-44 victory over Monroe Central. The game was held Nov. 26 inside the Monroe Central Seminoles Gymnasium.

Flannery just signed to further her athletic career at Lake Erie (Storm) College, Ohio, and started her final high season in style, scoring a game high 25-points, which included 3-3 from beyond the arc that helped the Pilots get off to a great start.

Flannery drained two bonus bombs and was 2-2 at the line in the opening stanza, while Mikenzie Cieszeski drilled one of her own that gave the Pilots a 15-12 lead.

However, the Lady Seminoles wouldn't go away and trimmed the River lead to 25-24 heading into the locker room at the break.

The Pilots came out of the break firing on all cylinders with Flannery, Cieszeski and Candace Caldwell each draining a bonus bomb, while Carsyn Reynolds added a pair of two-pointers to give the visitors a 41-38 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Pilots' defense took control of the game in the fourth period, holding Monroe Central to six points, while the Pilots dropped in 14 markers.

Reynolds and Ally Long each netted eight points for the winners. Caldwell tallied seven markers, including a triple, while Cieszeski scored all six of her points beyond the arch. Riley Lollathin swished a free throw for all the River points.

The Lady Pilots will look to move to 2-0 when they host the Bridgeport Bulldogs Nov. 29.
