Magnolia Captures Regional Crown

November 7, 2018

After going the distance in the Region I, Section II sectional, where the Blue Eagles would have to work their way to the championships and play 10 sets that lasted over five hours, you would think Magnolia would be a little tired. However, it didn't show as the Lady Eagles beat Madonna and Tyler Consolidated in straight sets to become the Region I champions heading into the volleyball state championships.

After disposing of Madonna, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-13, with Kyndra Pilant and Mady Winters bashing 40 kills - and Lenieca Grimm dishing out 42 assists, it was looking good for the championship bout against Tyler Consolidated, which also won in straight sets against Wheeling Central.

However, the Blue Eagles had the Knights where they wanted in the first set at 7-6 with a Winters block and extended it to 14-10 with the help of Winters and Pilant kills. The Knights got as close as 16-12 before the Blue Eagles put together a 10-3 run, ending with a Pilant kill andwinning 25-15.

Magnolia raced out to a big 12-6 lead, but the Knights' Reagan Smith served up five straight service points after getting the service back and tied the set up at 12. From this point they were all tied up five more times at 24-24 with the Knights having the serve.

However, a Tyler service fault gave the Eagles the lead and serve at 25-24 and would win a nice volley to win, 26-24 in a set that both teams had their chances.

In the third set, the teams went toe-to-toe with six lead changes, but a Pilant kill gave the Eagles the lead for good with a monster bash. Grimm would then serve up five straight points before the Knights could break serve and pulled to within 23-21 when Winters rejected a shot by the Knights to give Magnolia a 24-22 lead after returning the serve back to the Knights with a service fault. But Winters would bounce one off a Knight defender for the match winner to move on as the Region I champion in the state volleyball tournament.

Pilant and Winters pounded 35 kills in the match, while Grimm dished out 36 assists and Kayna Anderson bumping up 28 digs in the victory.

In the six sets, Pilant recorded 44 kills, 34 digs, six points, with one ace and four blocks, while Winters compiled 31 kills, 30 digs, 12 points, with three aces and four blocks to lead Magnolia. Grimm posted 78 assists, while scoring 21 points, with two aces, and bumping up 21 digs.

In addition, Anderson tallied 15 service points with an ace, while making 46 digs as well as keeping balls alive with some outstanding saves, as well as Liza Clegg and Zoey Jenkins. Clegg ended with 11 points and five digs, while Jenkins collected 17 digs. Kennedy Parsons finished with six points, 10 digs and two kills, while Jaci Rhode and Alyssa Kocher bumped up four and two digs, respectively.

Magnolia will head to Charleston Friday to take on Greater Beckley in the afternoon, while the Lady Knights will tangle with Greenbrier West the same day.
