Magnolia Runs Past River, 22-8

The Magnolia Blue Eagles evened their record to 2-2 with a 22-8 victory over cross-river rival River, Sept. 14 at Martin Flannery Field.

The Blue Eagles opened the scoring late in the first period with a Patrick Mirandy 67-yard touchdown scamper. The PAT gave the Big Blue a 7-0 lead.

The Pilots would take the ensuing kick to their own 28-yard line, and with the help of a Stone Thompson 25-yard catch and run and a pair of Magnolia interference calls, were sitting pretty with a first and 10 at the Eagles; 15-yard line as the end of period one.

Mirandy slapped away a potential touchdown, but the Pilots would get a first and goal at the Eagles' three-yard line. The Eagles' defense held the Pilots to fourth and goal at the one yard line, before the Pilots' Carter Dennis rammed one in for their first score.

Thompson found his favorite receiver Michael Johnson for the two-point conversion pass to give the home team a 8-7 lead with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Late in the second period, an eight-yard River punt led to a 65-yard scoring drive in seven plays, aided by a Matt Gaiser 19-yard reception and capped off the drive with a Sebastian Stickler touchdown catch, with Silas McKeever catching the Mirandy two-point conversion pass to give the visitors a 15-8 lead heading into the locker room.

Magnolia would tack on the game-winner with a Jason Beisel 39-yard bust up the gut, and Mirandy tapped things off with PAT kick.

Mirandy paced the Eagles with 161 yards rushing and a touchdown, while completing seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Beisel gained 83 yards on 16 carries, while Gage Adams added four yards on his only carry.

Mirandy connected with Stickler four times for 51 yards and a touchdown, while Gaiser hauled in two passes for 28 yards, and McKeever six yards on one snag.

Thompson was 6-22 for 82 yards and three interceptions, completing with Johnson four times for 62 yards, and three for 20 yards to Carter Dennis.

Carter Dennis gained 48 yards on nine carries with a touchdown, while Johnson lost 16 yards on 10 carries. Chase Lawrence lost nine yards on one carry.

Defensively, the Dennis brothers paced the Pilots with a combined 20 solo tackles, three assists, with seven for loss of yardage.

For Magnolia, Silas McKeever made eight tackles, with one going for loss of yardage, while Stickler made six tackles to lead the way. James Stillwagoner also made six tackles, with one tackle for loss of yardage and for good measure had a quaterback sack.

Dagotta Litton, also had six tackles, with two tackles for loss of yardage and an interception, while Gage SAdams also sit down six tackled and picked off an interception.

Jared Barrows made five stops, with two tackles for loss of yardage, and had a quarterback sack.

The Eagles and Pilots return to action Friday night with River taking on Shadyside on Flannery Field, while the Eagles host Frontier on Alumni Field, with both games kicking-off at

7 p.m.
