Kudos To Mayor Steve Bohrer

July 11, 2018
Wetzel Chronicle

"We will get it taken care of, and if not, I don't need to be here."

Those were strong words from New Martinsville Mayor Steve Bohrer at the Monday, July 2 meeting of city council.

A delegation of residents had approached the council, concerned about sewage entering their homes after a recent heavy rainfall. Who would blame them for being upset? Residents described thousands of dollars worth of damage, inches of sewage coating their basements, sewer water shooting a foot or more into the air. They weren't just worried about damage to their materials and belongings though. They were also worried about contamination and disease.

Mayor Bohrer did not give excuses. Too often, that is what we see in these cases. We know infrastructure can be old and damaged; we know times are tough, and funds can be lacking.

Mayor Bohrer and council seem to realize that, as elected officials, it is their duty to serve their citizens. They have to find solutions to tough problems, and will face tough decisions.

However, Mayor Bohrer and council seem to realize that, and we applaud them for it. The attention and focus they showed concerned residents is to be applauded, and we look forward to seeing a solution to those concerns.
