Hometown heroes Richard Erlewine, William Carl Dendron, and D.J. Smith gathered recently at Quinet's Court Restaurant in New Martinsville where Erlewine and Smith presented Dendron with an American Flag, donated by David McKinley. Erlewine is a United States Army Veteran, and Smith is a veteran of the United States Marine. Dendron is also a former United States Marine, who bravely served his country during the Vietnam conflict, having participated in 12 different combat operations. He turned 70 on April 9 of this year.

Dendron enlisted in the Marine Corps in September, 1965 and performed his basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, as part of the 3rd recruit training Battalion. On May 15, 1967, he embarked on Government Aircraft and arrived and disembarked on May 16, 1967 at Dong, Ha, Republic of Vietnam. He was quickly moved to the battle fields where he was put in charge of 9-10 combat Marines.

Dendron spent the next year and six months in Vietnam and returned by Government Aircraft on November 30, 1968 to El Toro, California. He was upgraded to CPL and received an Honorable Discharge on March 16, 1970. Dendron now resides in the New Martinsville area of Wetzel County.
