Three Are Honored As Athletes Of the Week

May 29, 2018
Wetzel Chronicle

This past week we had several nice athletes that did just great things, whether it be at the state track meet or during regional baseball play.

In track, we could pick out a number of impressive athletes, as the Magnolia boys team won the championship in WVSSAC Class 1A. Brooks Parsons came from behind and won the high jump at 6-3, while being the anchor in the 4x400 meter relay team with Jason Beisel, Ethan Herrick and Patrick Mirandy - breaking the state record held by Wheeling Central, 3:31.22 to 3:31.30.

Parsons also finished a close second in the open 400 meter dash, and gained another second in the 4x100 meter relay team with Beisel, James Stillwagner and Jack Booth to give him 22.5 points, good enough for third place in the high points award.

Also winning the "Athlete of the Week" title and impressing in track was also MHS junior Jakob Barrows, who won the shot put with a throw of 49-00.25. This got the party started for Magnolia with his 10 points.

The next recipient of our "Athlete of the Week" title is Patrick Mirandy. He was a member of the baseball team, as well as the track team. In track, he was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that took first place. He also was 4x200 meter relay team that placed third, as well as in the open 400 meter dash.

Mirandy was also stout in the baseball game the day before against Tyler Consolidated in the "winner-take-all" sectional finale before heading to Charleston for the state track meet.

He homered, single twice, and plated four runs, while scoring four times.

He mopped up, striking out three and walking one in an inning and one-third.

There were many more that could have won the last "Athlete Of The Week" this sports season.
