Hornets Sting Blue Devils in 8-7 Triumph

Four Hundred players had multiple hits, and Bryce Bartrug struck out eight batters to lead Hundred to a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Beallsville last week to end the regular season.

Logan Norris doubled, with two outs in the top of the first, and scored after back-to-back singles by Hunter Tustin and Bartrug.

Bartrug set the Devils down in order that including a strike-out and a pair of come-backers that Bartrug threw out. The Hornets batted seven in the second and failed to score, while leaving the bases loaded.

Hundred scored a run in the top of the second when Rine singled with two outs and scored on a Skyar Goff double to knot things up at two. The Blue Devils tied things up at 2-2 in the bottom half on three singles and a walk after two innings of play

In the third, Travis McCoy tripled, but failed to score. The Devils took over the lead at 4-2 off a walk and three singles.

Hundred regained the lead with a six-run fourth, when Rine belted his first of two singles to open the fourth and scored on a Goff double. After a walk to Gauge Boston, the Hornets picked up their second out; however, a hit by pitch, a walk, and two more singles had the Hornets in front, 8-4.

Beallsville threatened in the bottom half of the fifth on three singles, but Bartrug dug himself out of the jam with a pair of strike-outs. Hundred added an insurance run in the fifth when Boston and Norris hit back-to-back singles and scored on a Bartrug fielders choice to give the Hornets an 9-4 lead.

Beallsville added three runs in the sixth on a walk and three singles to pull to within 9-7, heading into the top of the seventh.

The Blue Devils gave up singles to Rine and Goff, but got out of a pickle with a strike-out and sending them to the plate in the bottom of the seventh only down two runs.

Bartrug took care of business, getting the first two outs, but gave up a pair of singles, putting the tying run at first, and the winning run coming to the plate.

However, Hundred Head Coach Ron Dennis stayed with his youngster, and Bartrug would deliver, striking out the final batter for a hard-fought 9-7 Hundred victory.

Rine paced the Hornets with four singles, while Goff added a single and a pair of doubles. Norris added a single and a double, while Bartrug singled twice. McCoy tripled, while Boston and Tustin each added a single in the 14-hit Hornet attack.

Dragons Topple Hornets, 19-7

The Cameron Dragons scored eight runs on seven hits in the home-half of the first inning, and held on to eliminate the Hundred Hornets from the WVSSAC Class-A Region I, Section I championships May 7 at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.

The Hornets looked to take it right to the Dragons in the opening stanza after loading the bases, but Cameron held its own and got out of the early jam without any damage.

After the Dragons tallied their eight runs in the home half, the Hornets responded with two runs in the second and five more in the fourth, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Skylar Goff paced the Hornets with a single and a double, while knocking in a pair of teammates. Zach Zedell plated one and had two singles, while Hunter Tustin and Bryce Bartrug each knocked in one run with his base-hit.
