Three Make "Athlete of the Week" Honor

May 9, 2018
Wetzel Chronicle

Again, we had multiple area athletes deserving of our Athlete Of The Week title, but we settled on three deserving athletes in Brooks Parsons (Magnolia High School boys track), Liza Clegg (Magnolia High School girls track), as well as Megan Brown (Valley High School softball).

Parsons not only won the 400-meter dash and the boys high jump, he was also on the 4x100 and 400 meter relay teams that placed first, helping the Blue Eagle boys win their OVAC Class-AAA title.

Clegg, only a sophomore, won the 100 and 300-meter hurdle events; she was also on the Blue Eagles' girls shuttle team that also took first, helping Magnolia to a runner-up award in the OVAC Class-AAA.

BROOKS PARSONS

Brown, this sophomore softball standout, has played in multiple positions for the Valley Lumberjills. Last week, she helped Valley win its first softball game against Hundred -- ripping a bases-loaded double, as well as combining with two other 'Jills in a no-hitter.

Brown got the win from the circle, and she picked up a save in a 13-12 win over Cameron in the Lumberjills' win in the Region I, Section I contest -- striking-out six. She went five innings and came back with two outs. She came in with the bases juiced and threw two straight balls out of the strike-zone, but came back to throw three straight strikes to strike-out the last batter, helping Valley get the win and save.

Brown also singled twice and scored three times, while knocking in a run and stealing three bases at the plate as well.

During the spring sports season, only high school from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley are eligible to win. They can only win once per sport during the regular season.
