Blood Drive Brings Out Donors

May 2, 2018
BY TELINA FRYE - Staff Writer (tfrye@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

There was a blood drive held at St. Vincent de Paul's Klug Hall on April 19, and several people came out to donate the gift of blood.

When asked what motivated Roger Lee Hartline to give more than seven gallons of blood over the past ten years, he explained his daughter had acute myeloid leukemia as a child. When he saw how much blood was needed to adequately treat his daughter, Hartline understood what a difference it could make in someone else's life if he would donate his own blood. According to the European Hematology Association, approximately 150 blood donors are required to adequately cater for a single patient's complete therapy with little variation for age, prognostic group or intensity of treatment.

Thus, with the reduction in the percentage of people who are able to give blood, each donor could be the determining factor in saving a life.
