Dems Hold Bean Soup Fundraiser

Getting people out to vote seems to be a good way to win an election, and the Wetzel County Democratic Executive Committee is trying to accomplish that goal. On Saturday, April 7, the group continued its effort has it hosted a bean soup and cornbread fundraiser at the Matthew Barker Complex in Paden City.

Several candidates and Democrats from around the area gathered together for good food and fellowship, along with an opportunity to campaign. Wetzel, Tyler, Marshall, Wood and Monongalia counties were represented at the event.

WCDEC Chairman Denny Longwell, a candidate for the Second District State Senate, was present to speak and welcome those in attendence. Frances Headley, Chairperson for the WCDEC Veterans and Military Families Council, read a letter from U.S. Senator Joe Manchin on his efforts to secure funding of $66,371 to assist homeless veterans.

Dave Pethtel, State Delegate from the Fifth District, spoke about the importance of voting. Pethtel said when people don’t vote, we end up suffering. He said having the majority means everything, and if the Democrats get out and vote, that can be accomplished.

Chairman Longwell echoed Pethtel’s statements about the importance of voting. He said it is a right and obligation. He said each vote counts and could make a difference. He spoke about the difference it makes when people band together. “I urge you to take a stand by casting your vote on May 8, and again when we remember in November.”

West Virginia First Congressional District candidate Kendra Fershee shared her her thoughts on the current drug epidemic in West Virginia. Fershee is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and professor of Law at West Virginia University. She said she would like to let those in Washington know that W.Va. is an incredible place and would do her best to get them to join in the fight against the challenges destroying the state’s communities and its people.

Sandy Hunt also addressed the crowd about her candidancy for the New Martinsville City Recorder position. Hunt is presently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Wetzel County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Wetzel County Museum. She is a life-time Democrat and owner of S&S Fine Diamonds and Jewelry, with her husband Steve.

H. J. Rogers, running for Wetzel County Board of Education and the Democratic State Executive Committee, attended the event, along with his wife. She is also on the ballot as a candidate for the WCDEC. Raymond (B.B.) Smith and Greg Morris, both candidates for the Wetzel County Commission, attended the event and made their rounds to talk with fellow Democrats.
