Mikey Hamrick Heads To State

Mikey Hamrick, Kyler Cecil and Brody Cartwright placed fourth, sixth and sixth place, respectively, to help the young Blue Eagle grapplers finish in 14th place, with 42 points, in the 2018 Region I Class-A/AA State Regional Wrestling Tournament Feb. 8-9 in Fairmont Armory.

Fairmont East won the Regional Crown going away with 249.5 points, while Oak Glen nipped Berkley Springs by eight points with 159 points.

Hamrick paced the young Eagles with a fourth place finish that earned him a state berth in the WVSSAC State Tournament this weekend in Huntington.

Magnolia’s 285 lb Mikey Hamrick makes a comeback take-down and pin in a match against Weirton Madonna.

Hamrick opened the regional with a upset win over Weirton Madonna's Ryan Okey in the 285 lb. Class. Hamrick was down 8-2 when he escaped and reversed Okey with a take-down and a pin to move on.

Hamrick then lost to Zach Frazier of (Fairmont Senior), before moving on to the third place match with a pin over the Weir Riders' Jordan Brueck. He then lost, 7-1, to Steven White of Keyser, and finished fourth to earn his first appearance to the WVSSAC State Wrestling Tournament.

Both Brody Cartwright and Kyler Cecil each finished in sixth place, missed heading to state by one win. Cartwright opened with a pin against Lain Campbell with a quick pin, but lost two straight to Jackson Moomau of Petersburg, who won it all and Kyler Flannigan, who finished in third place before bowing to Campbell to finish in sixth place.

Cecil, lost his first bout to Wyatt Conley of Weir, before winning by a fall to Logan Zimmerman of Berkley Springs. He lost to Kevin Brewer (Fairmont Senior) before losing his final match to Kaden Lundy of Oak Glen to claim sixth place.

Other Blue Eagles wrestlers that won matches were Devin Hawkins (132 lbs) over Stephen Yost of Tyler Consolidated; Gage Adams (138 lbs) won 3-1 to Cody Hunter of Tyler, and David Williams of (North Marion); Jack Booth (145 lbs) won his opening match to Jacob Logston of Frankfort, 5-2; and Chris Wetzel (152 lbs) beat Dusty Clegg of Paden City.

Others competing were Jason Beisel (126 lbs), Woodson London (170 lbs), James Stillwagoner (182 lbs) and Hunter Scott (220 lbs).

Rander Amos (160 lbs) of Paden City won two matches by pins over Will Ranyan of (Ritchie County) in his very first Regional match, and pinned Gavin Stern of St Marys.

Other Wildcats wrestling for the very first time in the WVSSAC Class-A/AA were Ryan Cross (220 lbs), Doneven Hawkins (132 lbs) and Dusty Clegg (152 lbs).
