Sophie Palmer scored 18 points on Dec. 20, but it wasn't quite enough to get past Weirton Madonna, 50-37, in girls basketball in Weirton.

The Lumberjills, feeling the loss of Caitlyn Underwood due to a broken ankle, have been on a three-game slide after winning the first two games of the season.

In the game against Madonna, the 'Jills were held to single digits in the first three quarters, including seven points in the opening period, and only four points in the second stanza. The 'Jills fell behind, 27-11, by the break.

In the first half, Palmer scored a deuce in the opening period, while Jenna Dallison picked up the slack in the second period, sinking two Lumberjill baskets. Yet the 'Jills fell behind, 44-20, heading into the second half.

Palmer erupted and scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, tallying eight markers in both the third and fourth periods, while limiting Madonna to 23 second half points, including only six points in the fourth period.

Following Palmer's 16 points, was Tessa Dudgeon with seven points, while McKinlee Yoho and Jenna Dallison each recorded six points for all the Valley scoring.

Madonna had three girls score in double figures, with Andrea Alimario leading the way with 11 points. Kasey Canei and Kennedy Martin each compiled 10 points.

Valley 26, Cameron 46

The Cameron Dragons raced out to a 15-6 first quarter lead and never looked back in handing the Valley Lumberjills a 46-26 set back on Dec. 16, in Dragon territory.

The Lady Dragons have done what no other team could do, and that was hold the 'Jills Sophie Palmer to only a bucket.

The 'Jills McKinley Yoho paced Valley with a dozen markers, while Rachel Bates followed with five points and four rebounds. Tessa Dudgeon tallied three points, while hauling in a team-high six rebounds.

In addition, Palmer and Jenna Dallison each scored a deuce, while Kaeleen Utt swished a pair of free throws.

The Lumberjills hosted Paden City on Dec. 29. The Wetzel Chronicle will have this coverage in its Jan. 10 edition.
