Pilots Upset Shadyside

When informed his Tigers went 6:45 of the second half of Friday’s game at the R.L. Potts Gymnasium without a point, Shadyside head coach Ed Andes replied, “It felt like that didn’t it?”

Unbeaten host River High (6-0), carried by it’s defense once again, pulled away down the stretch to secure a hard-earned 54-42 victory against it’s ancient rival.

“We gave up 17 in the first quarter,” said River mentor Mark Romick, “but we got back in form defensively from that point. When we do that it’s tough to beat us.”

It doesn’t hurt to have all-Ohio senior Lukas Isaly in the lineup either as the Pilot senior had 26 points to lead all scorers, while classmate Cody Hupp added 16 with several clutch hoops in the paint.

Andes cited the Pilots’ No. 4 as the difference in this one.”(Isaly) played all 32 minutes, stayed focused, and split our defense moving the ball,” he said.

Shadyside hit from 3-point range five times in the opening quarter, including three ‘bombs’ from 6-1 senior Josh Zandron, while sophomore Kelly Hendershot’s second trey of the game with one second left gave the Tigers to a 17-16 lead.

“(Zandron) and (Hendershot) shot it extremely well in the first half,” said Romick, as the visitors hit 10-of-21 the first 16 minutes. Zandron led SHS with 25 points, while Hendershot finished with 10.

Alec Shepherd’s baseline swish kept the Tigers up 25-22, but River’s Stone Thompson converted a steal into an easy layup and Isaly scored off a nice dish from Drew Dietz for a 26-25 hosts lead at the break.

Hendershot scored in the paint to open the third for Shadyside’s final lead, which vanished on a Hupp bank-shot and two Tiger turnovers leading to layups at the other end by Isaly and Hupp.

“We had a lot of good looks in the second half,” added Andes, “but only one offensive rebound the last 16 minutes and not extra shots.”

Zandron’s pair at the free throw line pulled Shadyside within 34-33 at 2:45, but the well went dry for Tiger shooters the rest of the way.

River closed the third with a three-point play from Hupp and Isaly’s layup for a 39-33 lead.

John Murphy, the Pilots’ 6-3 junior, swished a pair a the line for a 42-33 lead and Isaly nailed a 15-footer for 44-33 cushion.

A drive from Zandron closed it to 44-38, but Hupp and Isaly combined for 10-point lead at 2:05.

When Anthony Coggins drilled two from the stripe at 1:49 to pare it to 48-40, Romick’s crew sewed it up at the free throw line including four-of-four from Dietz in the final minute.

“(Dietz) gave us an outstanding all-around effort,” said Romick, as the big senior had six points, but 10 rebounds.

River, which visits Paden City, Wednesday, shot 19-of-44, while Shadyside (1-6) shot 14-of-40, including only four of 19 in the second half.

Shadyside earned a split winning the jayvee game 37-33 behind Robbie McFarland’s 12, while the River frosh easily won the first game of the triple-header.
