Eagles to Keep Soaring

December 27, 2017
BY BRUCE CRAWFORD - Staff Writer (bcrawford@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

Will a season without Caleb and Riley Nice, the duo who won 277 matches while only losing 45 matches, hurt the Eagles' chances to continue their winning ways?

You betcha, but even with the loss of the Nice boys, the Eagles still will be a solid wrestling team.

They return head coach Eric McKeever and assistant coach Robert Gomez, as well as Dr. Vince Monseau to help keep the rock-steady Blue Eagle grapplers heading in the right direction.

Returning seniors Gage Adams (138 lbs), Jack Booth (126 lbs), Devin Hawkins (132 lbs) and Zach Ware (182 lbs) are the nucleus, along with returning starters Skylar Cecil (120 lbs), Trenton Mitchel (145 lbs), Carter Pyles (152 lbs), Chris Wetzel (160 lbs), Woodson London (170 lbs), James Stillwagoner (182 lbs), Mikey Hamrick (285 lbs), and Kyle Waters (285 lbs). They look to keep wrestling at Magnolia on the rise.

The season appears promising as McKeever has some talented newcomers to keep the Eagles flying high, that includes Kayden Jones (106 lbs), Brody Cartwright (195 lbs), Hunter Scott (220 lbs), Sam Zombotti (120 lbs), Alan Collins (120 lbs) and Jesse Coulter (120 lbs).

"We expect to compete in each and every competition, and to qualify some of the team in state, as well as winning some matches in the OVAC," said McKeever.

The season looks promising even without the Nice boys. They have some talented wrestlers that will compete at a high level all season, and they look to surprise a lot of teams.

Magnolia split a match with Brooke and Tyler Consolidated in its first wrestling match, losing to Brooke, 47-30, but beat Tyler 57-16. They also finished second to a very good Linsly team in the Larry Richie Memorial.

The Eagles will host a Holiday Quad with Paden City, Monroe Central, RCB, Beallsville and Tyler Consolidated Dec. 29 inside the Magnolia Gymnasium.
