Beneficiaries of the 2017 Community Festival of Trees gathered Friday, Dec. 1 to receive word on funds raised from the Nov. 17 event.

This year, the event yielded $2,442.27 for each of its three chosen charities - Grow Local Go Local, Wetzel County Hope and Memories, and Friends of Paden City Pool.

This is the most the event has raised in its three years.

"I thank the community for its support of the event," event chairperson Terri Tyler said. "I hope to see everyone at the Festival of Trees' Holiday Home Tours, and I hope to also see them at the 2018 Festival of Trees," she said.

This year the event was sponsored by Friends of Wetzel County.

The main event was the auction of several Christmas trees, decorated by local organizations and businesses. Proceeds from the auction benefited the three local charities.

Wetzel County Hope and Memories provides gas cards to people who are receiving chemo/radiation treatments. Since October 2016, the charity has raised approximately $14,000. The charity's biggest fundraiser is usually its coon hunts; through its October 2017 coon hunt, Wetzel County Hope and Memories raised $7,000.

Wetzel County Hope and Memories has also held quarter auctions, spaghetti dinners, and it was a beneficiary from 7-Eleven's annual 7-11 day.

Grow Local Go Local is an organization educating and helping communities plant and harvest fresh vegetables and making a Farmers Market available to the New Martinsville area. Grow Local Go Local also started a farmers market, featuring locally-grown goods, approximately five years ago.

Grow Local Go Local has also supported community gardens. Through these community gardens, 700 pounds of food has been donated to those in need.

Additionally, Grow Local Go Local has also supported workshops on activities such as canning, juicing, and more.

Friends of PC Pool is a volunteer organization, which helps to maintain and keep open the pool in Paden City. The organization is passionate about having safe activities available for its community's children. Friends of Paden City Pool has sponsored free swims at the pool.

Organizations and businesses decorating trees for the 2017 Festival of Trees included Gabriel Project, Quota Club, Progressive Bank, Hope & Memories, Rotary, Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union, New Martinsville Church of God, WVNCC, J&H Farms, C&C Designs, Wileyville Auction House, Shortline Station, and Wetzel Valley Agencies.

The event featured a silent auction and $500 cash tree, sponsored by the Quota Club. There was also a 50/50 drawing, music, and dancing.

Additionally, since 100 tickets were sold to the event, an attendee of the event was randomly selected to receive $500, to go toward the attendee's charity of choice. Linda Riggs was the winner of the funds, and she chose Helping Hands as her charity of choice.
