The Community Festival of Trees brought in more than $7,000 for local charities at its third annual event, held Nov. 17 at Wetzel County's Mollohan Center.

This year, the event was sponsored by The Friends of Wetzel County.

The main event was the auction of several Christmas trees, decorated by local organizations and businesses. Proceeds from the auction benefitted three local charities - Wetzel County Hope and Memories, Grow Local Go Local, and Friends of Paden City Pool.

Since 100 tickets were sold for the Nov. 17 event, $500 was given away.

The winner, whose ticket is drawn, received $500 to go to her charity of choice. Linda Riggs' ticket was drawn; therefore, she chose Helping Hands as her charity of choice.

The first 100 attendees of the event also received a Star Shower Light Display, courtesy of Wal-Mart.

Concerning this year's three main charities, Friends of PC Pool is a volunteer organization, which helps to maintain and keep open the pool in Paden City.

Wetzel County Hope & Memories provides gas cards to people who are receiving chemo/radiation treatments, and Grow Local Go Local is an organization educating and helping communities plant and harvest fresh vegetables and making a Farmers Market available to the New Martinsville area.

Organizations and businesses decorating trees for the 2017 event included Gabriel Project, Quota Club, Progressive Bank, Hope & Memories, Rotary, Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union, New Martinsville Church of God, WVNCC, J&H Farms, C&C Designs, Wileyville Auction House, Shortline Station, and Wetzel Valley Agencies.

The event featured a silent auction and $500 cash tree, sponsored by the Quota Club. There was also a 50/50 drawing, music, and dancing.

The Wetzel Chronicle will have more details on the funds raised, in a future issue.
