Formula One Powerboats to Race In RegattaFest

September 27, 2017
Wetzel Chronicle

An agreement between the organizers of the national F1 racing tour, the national Powerboat Superleague series and RegattaFest will bring the exciting F1 tunnel boats to the sixth annual festival scheduled for Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 in New Martinsville, West Virginia.

Capable of speeds up to 140 mph, the fastest outboard boats in the world to compete on inland waters will be part of the RegattaFest race program. Their 2.5 and 3-litre motors pack up to 300 horsepower on 1200 pounds of boat. The addition of these boats plus the originally sanctioned F2, F3, Super Sport, the Inboard category classes of Grand National Hydros and the SEs creates an unbelievable race card. Total entry count is now expected to be approximately 50 boats.

The F1 tour was originally scheduled to race in Beaumont, Texas on Sept. 16 and 17. However, Hurricane Harvey forced a race cancellation but opened the opportunity for the group to complete their 2017 season by racing in New Martinsville. Over 15 boats are expected to attend from all over the United States and Canada including former Superleague champion Terry Rinker, (Tampa, Fla.) who set the straightaway record for these boats at 144.346 mph on September 23, 2012 in New Martinsville during the inaugural RegattaFest event, then known as the New Martinsville Regatta & Records Challenge.

The pit area is being enlarged and will now include the parking lot between WVNCC and Harlan Drive in addition to the block of Main Street between Washington Street and Harlan Drive as well as the lot between the former Storc Auction House and the Wetzel County Museum. Extra docks are being brought in from Merco Marine to accommodate the increased entry list. Forty feet will be added to the New Martinsville city docks to make a platform long enough to start the race in front of the Fireman's Park on RegattaFest Way.

Make plans to join fellow race fans the weekend of Sept. 30 through Oct. 1 on RegattaFest Way in downtown New Martinsville at the Fireman's Park on the Ohio River.

Bring your lawn chairs, and be prepared for heart-stopping action on the Ohio River. Testing and practice runs begin on Friday, Sept. 29 at 1 pm. Racing action starts at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It's fast; it's fun; and best of all, the festival is FREE thanks to the generous contributions of local sponsors.
