River Pilots Secure First Victory Of The Season

River sophomore Allison Bennett had a superb night of volleyball in Bellaire on Aug. 22, securing 15 points - including five service aces - while setting up 30 with assists, to lead the River Pilots to a four-set victory over Bellaire Big Reds.

In the opening set, the Pilots took charge and was leading 9-3 before the Big Reds turned the table and closed the gap to 14-10, before the Pilots finished off the Big Reds, 25-17.

A little more of the same was witnessed in the second set as the Pilots raced out to a commanding 9-3 lead, but this time the Pilots didn't let the Big Reds get any closer than the final score, 25-14.

The hometown Big Reds turned the tables and jumped out to a 8-5 lead. The Pilots evened the count to 21-21, before Bellaire closed out with four straight points to get the win.

The third set loss woke up the Lady Pilots and drilled the hosts in to submission, 25-7, in the fourth set to win the match.

Besides the play of Bennett, Megan Dennis added 10 points, Katie Straub added nine points, including six aces, while Lauren Flannery added eight points and three aces. Flannery, also chipped in with 15 kills and three blocks. Morgan Mahoney and Cortney Sapp each recorded seven kills and scored seven points in helping River even their record to 1-1.

Pilots Run Out Of Gas In Season Opener

River sophomore Allison Bennett secured a triple-double, dishing out a career-high 43 assists, while making 10 digs and scoring 10 points - that included three service aces. However, it wasn't quite enough to get past the Lady Bulldogs in five sets in a mutual season-opener Aug. 21 in Bridgeport.

After falling 25-20 in the first set, the Lady Pilots started to take control, beating the Lady 'Dogs, 14-25, in set two and 22-25 in set three. However, Bridgeport wouldn't have it, winning the fourth set 25-17 and the tie-breaker 15-10 to win the match.

Cortney Sapp paced the Lady Pilots with 11 kills, while Lauren Flannery and Katie Straub each recorded 10 kills and Megan Ladyga eight.

Flannery finished off an impressive match with a double-double. She added 12 digs and scored six points. Straub added nine points, two aces and seven digs, while Sapp netted five points, made four digs and blocked a shot, and Ladyga scored two points.

Lacey Cordery bumped up 31 digs, while tacking on five points, that included a service ace. Megan Dennis also played extremely well, netting seven points - including a service ace, five digs and belted three kills, and blocked a shot. Candace Caldwell secured 15 digs, blasted five kills and tallied a point. Morgan Mahoney bumped up six digs tallied a point, while Halee Schultheis recorded a pair of digs and assists.
