Athletes of the Week

April 26, 2017
Wetzel Chronicle

Two area athletes - Hayden Hizer from Paden City in baseball and River's Riley Lollathin in softball - earned recognition this week for the top spot.

Hizer, the do-it-all shortstop and flame thrower for the Paden City baseball team, had several overall nice outings. Besides playing a remarkable shortstop, and is one, if not the best lead-off batters in the Ohio Valley. He singled, tripled and knocked in two teammates, as well as striking out eight batters in a loss to Wirt. He singled against Bishop Donahue, and struck out seven against Ritchie County. He also singled and doubled, knocked in a run against Magnolia, and he singled, plated five, while belting a grand-slam home-run against Hundred.

Lollathin had a great week as well. Besides playing a solid second base, she makes team worry when she gets on and she gets on a lot. She tripled in a loss to Magnolia; singled against Bishop Donahue, and knocked in four runs with a pair of inside the park home-runs against Barnsville. She also singled twice, doubled and tripled and plated a run against Fort Frye.

There were many more area athletes who had a good weeks, including Kayna Anderson of Magnolia. She was a home-run shy of hitting for the cycle in the 5-3 nine inning victory over River. She singled twice in a win over Ravenswood, and singled in a loss to Bishop Donahue.

Also Dylan Conner, Patrick Mirandy, Dalton Pritchard and Eli Nice of Magnolia did pretty well, too. Conner singled three times in a win over Ritchie; two in a loss to Tyler Consolidated, while Mirandy hit four singles against Ritchie, and punched out six batters against Tyler. Pritchard struck-out eight in relief to get the 9-4 come-back win against Ritchie, and aided his cause with an RBI single. Nice belted a two out two RBI walk-off single in a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over River.

Jenna Ferrebee of Paden City smacked a pair of two RBI doubles, while knocking in five runs in a win over Ritchie. Madeline Cox had an RBI single against Clay-Battelle, and knocked in three runs on three singles in their win over Ritchie. She also singled against River.

During the Spring Sports Season, athletes who win Athlete of the Week can only win once during the regular season. Only athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley can win the title. The student athletes are selected by the sports staff at the Wetzel Chronicle.
