With the weather holding back a lot of games, we don't have as many sporting events than last week, but we had some superb athletes do well. This week's Athlete of the Week is Ashlyn Moses from Paden City. She belted a single along with a pair of stand-up triples, while knocking in five runs in a win over Valley.
Special mention goes to the Wildcats' Clayton Thomas and Hayden Hizer. Thomas was a home-run shy of hitting for the cycle in the 'Cats win over Valley, while plating three teammates. Hizer did some good work at the plate as well as from the mound in a victory over Monroe Central. He pitched a two-run, three-hitter, while striking out seven from the mound and belted a two-run single from the plate. Hizer also had a triple and pair of singles, while knocking in four runs in their win over Valley.
Earning Honorable Mention is the Blue Eagles' Ashley Tharp. Tharp pitched a three-hitter in the win over River and a two-hit loss against the defending and undefeated Wheeling Central Maroon Knights, (all singles) while striking out seven. She also singled and doubled while knocking in a run against River.
During the spring sports season, athletes that win Athlete of the Week can only win once during the regular season. Only athletes from Hundred, Magnolia, Paden City, River and Valley can win the title. The student athletes are selected by the sports staff at the Wetzel Chronicle.
