Local Cub Scouts Hold Adventure Days

April 5, 2017
BY CHAD TURNER - For the Wetzel Chronicle (cturner@tylerstarnews.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

Local Cub Scouts recently held an Adventure Day in order to give scouts chances to earn extra "belt loops," awards for achieving certain goals, as well as invite other kids to join the scouts. There were several stations that offered activities for the kids such as Science Rocks, Star Lab's Constellations, BB Gun shooting, STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math), a rocket launching station, Fire Safety, Art Explosion and other various science and technology based events.

Cub Scout Camp will be held on June 12 at the Wetzel county 4- H grounds. This year's theme will be, "Space Travelers: The Cub Adventures Continue." Sally Conklin, director of the Cub Scouts, stated that, "Last year we had 46 scouts; this year there are 123 registered." There were more than 70 kids in attendance for camp last year, but with the addition of two new units in the district, the numbers are sure to increase.

There were kids from several counties including Tyler, Wetzel, Ohio, Monroe, and Marshall Counties, totaling to 123 scouts. There were close to 200 people on hand, if you include the parents. Also, the Boys Scouts have started a new pilot program called the Lion Program, designed for kindergarten kids. District Executive for National Trails Bret Nadolski was on hand to teach the cubs the proper way to shoot and retrieve rockets. Also, the New Martinsville Smoke Safety House was on site to teach fire prevention and safe evacuation in the event of a fire. Kevin Yeager and Chad Lynch taught the young scouts the safe way to properly handle a BB gun.
