Ramp Festival To Cook Up Fun

April 5, 2017
BY LAUREN MATTHEWS - Editor (lmatthews@wetzelchronicle.com) , Wetzel Chronicle

The Fourth Annual Shortline Ramp Festival will be held Saturday, April 8 at the Robert C. Byrd Center in Pine Grove.

The day has plenty of activities for all festival-goers. There will be games, live bluegrass music, a 5K run/walk, inflatable bounce house and obstacle course, box car races for all ages, contests and prizes, a photo booth, vendors, chicken bingo, and plenty of tasty ramp-related treats.

This year's ramp dinner will be prepared by the Short Line Engineer Energy Kids. The menu will include soup beans with ramps, boiled potatoes with ramps, cornbread with ramps, dessert, and drink. The cost for the dinner is $7.50. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any of the Shortline Engineer Energy Kids, and proceeds benefit the kids' trip to Washington D.C. for the annual National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. Proceeds from the 5K will also benefit the SLS NEED program.

The following items/crafts will be for sale by vendors and crafters: Scentsy; Younique Cosmetics; Lularoe Clothing; handmade wreaths; Easter baskets, handmade soap, cards, dog treats; Ramp popcorn (from the Short Line Relay for Life), Wetzel County Hopes and Memories' ramp food, cupcakes, t-shirts, and cookies; and Makleigh Bassett's fresh made ramps by the bundle.

As to the box car races, the following age divisions will be allowed: 2-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-18, 19 and older.

Trophies will be awarded for first place in each division, and races will be conducted in age groups. The racer must decorate his or her race car (cardboard box) his or herself; however, an adult may assist. Racers to the age of 18 must decorate the car at the festival. Race car wheels will not touch the ground, and each child racer must have an adult pit crew member. The pit crew members will change front driver's tire with the spare tire, which will be provided and will be a bright color, so everyone knows the tire was changed.
