Please Do Not Litter

March 15, 2017
Wetzel Chronicle

In last week's Wetzel Chronicle, we published a story about the Wetzel County Solid Waste Authority's latest meeting, leading with the authority's discussion on litter control within the county.

The authority is struggling with ways to combat the issue.

Frankly, we are disgusted with the fact that the litter problem is as big as it is. It is an embarrassment to our county, an absolute blight when it comes to attracting newcomers to the area. Wetzel County should be known for its rolling hills and riverfront beauty, not plastic bags, paper fast food wrappers, empty bottles and cans, and styrofoam meal containers.

What possesses someone to litter? It is easy to keep a plastic bag in one's vehicle, in order to dispose of one's own garbage. These items then easily be disposed of in a trash receptacle, or better yet - recycled, if possible.

Instead, some feel entitled to carelessly toss their garbage out of their vehicle's windows instead, casting the problem on to someone else.

The commission has been gracious in giving money towards a countywide litter cleanup. This is the second year the commission has done such.

Yet, the solid waste authority sees the fact that something more needs to be done. Possible further measures may include a litter control officer, or maybe implementing city and county law enforcement.

Perhaps these measures may prevent the problem, and hopefully those who litter will be held accountable.
