So just what were the cords or cables lining state Route 2 in New Martinsville? That was the question on the lips of many people recently. The answer is that it was part of seismic testing being conducted by Precision Geophysical, Inc. of Millersburg, Ohio.
The company's president, Steven McCrossin, said they are conducting the multi-client survey from central Ohio through western West Virginia. They are targeting Utica Shale and Marcellus Shale natural gas and oil reserves. When asked who his clients were, McCrossin said, "Most of them don't want to be named."
Crews in New Martinsville were taking up some of the cable Tuesday afternoon, but McCrossin said the local survey will last a week or so. The testing is now going out state Route 7. The activity involves vibration trucks used to make a small vibration, enabling the company to map the area's subsurface. (Photo by Amy Witschey)
