MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Police say firefighters have found a couple dead inside a bedroom in their burning house in an apparent murder-suicide.

The Morgantown Police Department said in a news release that firefighters reached the scene at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, found the people dead inside, removed the bodies and continued fighting the fire for several hours.

The dead were identified as 65-year-old Steven Dennis Malarkey and his wife, 64-year-old Linda Rae Malarkey. A handgun was found in the house.

Police say they believe Steven Malarkey shot his wife then shot himself.

They were taken to the state medical examiner's office in Charleston for autopsies.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police say initial evidence indicates it was deliberately started.
