Lady Eagles Drop Season Finale

After losing an OVAC championship semi final last week, Lady Eagle hurler Tory Greene was back on her game April 29 against the John Marshall Lady Monarchs. But, a first-inning JM home run proved decisive in Magnolia’s 3-0 loss in its last game of the regular season.

MHS Tennis Season In The Books

The Magnolia High School Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis season came to a close at regional tournament play held at the Parkersburg City Park on May 2. Regional teams, in addition to Magnolia, are Oak Glen, Weir, Weirton Madonna, Wheeling Central, St. Marys, Williamstown, Parkersburg Catholic, Ravenswood, Wahama (girls only), and Point Pleasant.

Wildcats Beat Lumberjacks, 22-0

In the opener of the Class A Region One, Section Two Tournament May 5, the Paden City Wildcats used a 14-run fourth for a 22-0 victory over the Valley Lumberjacks. The ‘Cats sent 19 batters to the plate, who pounded out 14 hits, eight of which were back-to-back.

Hornets Drop Sectional Opener To Cameron Dragons

The Hundred Hornets had the Cameron Dragons on the ropes. But, a six-run sixth knocked away any chance the Hornets had to defeat the hosts in the opener of the WV Class A Region One, Section Two baseball competition May 5.

Wilmoth Perfect At Tyler County Speedway

Despite threatening weather, BDS Promotions stared down Ma Nature to get race #3 of the 2008 season in the books. The faithful fans of the Bullring were rewarded with some thrilling racing, as again over 100 cars filled the pits.

Marling Defeats Paliswat 230-212; Wins Last Match Play

Bull Marling defeated Justin Paliswat 230-212 in the last weekly qualifier to earn his berth in the 30th Annual Grand Finale. Match Play Tournament sponsors Miller Lite and Capital Beverage guarantee May 10 finale’s top prize of $1,200. Marling won $110, compliments of this week’s sponsor WesBanco. Joe Hamersly from Cambridge was the two-game high qualifier with games of 213, 246 and a 18 handicap for a 477.

Seavy Sets New OVAC Class AAA 400m Record

Luke Seavy, a senior at Magnolia High School, took home a gold, silver and bronze medal in leading the Blue Eagle boys’ track team to a seventh place finish in the OVAC Class AAA championships at Nelson Field in Bellaire last week.

Eagles Sting Fairmont Bees

After traveling over hill after hill on their way to take on the highly ranked East Fairmont Bee baseball squad May 2, the Magnolia Blue Eagles fell behind 1-0 after one inning of work. But, they got their act together and scored three runs in the top of the second and went on to defeat the Bees 17-11.

Eagles Defeat Knights; Win Sectional Title

The Magnolia Lady Eagles defeated the Tyler Consolidated Lady Silver Knights 10-1 and 10-0 May 1 to win the West Virginia Class AA Region One, Section Two softball title once more.

Wetzel County Teenager Helps Win National Cheerleading Championships

A Wetzel County teenager’s cheer and dance team won the national championship March 29-30 at the Jamfest Cheer and Dance competition in Pittsburgh.

Quarterback Clinic On Tap

The twelfth annual WV Classic Quarterback Skills Clinic will be held at Braxton County High School on June 7 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The instructor will be Jeff Simmons, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. 

Blue Eagles, Lady Pilots Win Events In WTTL Event

The WTTL finished the track season with the Magnolia boys and the River Girls taking the gold. In the boys’ division, Magnolia’s Luke Seavy won the 400 and 800 meter run, while placing second in the 100 meter dash and second in the high jump to lead the Blue Eagle boys to a first place finish with 138 points.

Blue Eagles Subdue Maroon Knights 11-2

Magnolia junior catcher Jordan Ash has given his team a huge lift with both the bat and the glove. With two come-from-behind victories over the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights in the first two matchups, it was a whole different story in the OVAC quarterfinals matchup April 22. The Blue Eagle bats, led by Ash, scored early and often in knocking the Knights off 11-2 at George Mullett Field to advance in the OVAC top four.

Stalder Wins Tax Day Euchre Tournament

Last minute entrant Duke Stalder came down from the hills of Ohio to win the Baristas Tax Day Euchre Tournament. Stalder tallied 11 out of a possible 15 points to edge out Bobby O’Neill. Gary Mallet captured third place. Mike Wilson took the Most Improved Trophy and Gary “Euchre” Bechdolt took home the Best Sportsman award. Bechdolt edged out Nathan “Peanut” Anderson in the tourney.

Paliswat Wins Next To Last Ohio Valley Match Play Event

Justin Paliswat won for the third time this year with a 241-196 victory over the 1983-84 champion Rick Maffe.

Paige Shriver Earns State Gymnastic Championship

Paige Shriver, 10, of Hundred won the floor exercise and vault championships of the state gymnastic level seven competition March 30 in Morgantown and has been acknowledged by the USA Junior Olympics.

Blue Eagle Tennis Teams Played To Their Potential

The Magnolia High School Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Teams, coached by Rhonda Fiest and assisted by Debbi Throckmorton, will be traveling to Parkersburg City Park to play in the Regional Tournament on May 1 beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting throughout the day.

Henthorn Wins Match Play

Larry Henthorn earned his berth in the 30th Annual Grand Finale with a 236-212 victory over Chuck Fisherkeller III. Henthorn won $75, compliments of weekly sponsor Mason-Dixon Gaming. Tournament sponsors Miller Lite and Capital Beverage guarantee the finale’s top prize of $1,200.

Valley Wins Mason-Dixon Championship

The Valley Boys’ and Girls’ track teams won the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships in Morgantown last week, with Haden Kocher emerging with four first-place finishes, while Amanda Sellers captured the girls’ high point mark.

Magnolia’s super sophomore Seth Pay carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but had to have a little help from teammate Kyle Kimble in helping the Blue Eagles claim a 6-2 verdict over Warren Local at Mullett Field in New Martinsville, April 17.

Eagle Boys’ Track Team Places Second In Meet

In the Stansberry/Dominion Transmission Invitational Track Invitational April 18, the Magnolia Boys Track Team placed second in a field of 10, behind first place Ritchie County. MHS Head Coach Matt Quinet had his team solidify a place among the elite Class AA track teams in the state.

Lady Wildcats Split Double Header With Bulldogs

The Paden City Lady Wildcats won the second game of a double-header April 12 with the homestanding Bridgeport Bulldogs, 11-8, after falling 17-3 in the first game.

MHS Boys’ Track Team Finishes Fourth; PCHS Girls’ Sixth

In the Ritchie County Pizza House Invitational Track Meet last week, the Paden City Lady Wildcats finished sixth behind Ritchie, which took in first place in a nine-team tournament. Tyler finished seventh, while Magnolia fell to eighth place, one place ahead of Wheeling Park.

Lumberjills Pound Ball, Topple Hornets

The Lady ’Jills of Valley High School pounded a season-high 14 hits en route to a credible 15-0 shutout victory over county rival Hundred in softball action at Hundred April 10.

The Valley Lumberjills parlayed a 13-hit attack into four runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Lincoln Lady Cougars defeated the ‘Jills 6-4, despite being out hit in game one of a double header.

Magnolia’s Tory Greene went the distance, striking out 10 while helping herself out at the plate with a two RBI double, to help give the Blue and Gold a 3-1 victory over the River Pilots April 10, at Hassig Fields in New Martinsville.

MHS Blue Eagles Humble Red Riders

Magnolia designated hitter Evan Botizan smacked a pair of singles and a double, while bring home a pair of base runners, to lead the Blue Eagles offensively in a convincing 8-5 win over Weir April 12 at New Martinsville. Andrew “Roo” Robinson came in to pitch in the seventh inning to seal the victory.

Eagles Bounce Pilots, 10-1

On April 9, Magnolia’s junior hurler Andrew Robinson struck out 12 and walked one, while allowing two hits, as the Blue Eagles went on to defeat the River Pilots, 10-1.

Valley Improves, But Falls To Dragons 13-12

A run in the bottom half of the seventh inning propelled the Cameron Dragons past the much-improved Valley Lumberjacks, 13-12 in high school baseball at Cameron April 9.

Chuck Fischerkeller III averaged 251 for five games enroute to his fourth weekly championship. Fischerkeller defeated Travis Southall 258-157 in the last match. Southall was the two-game high qualifier with games of 262, 203 and 12 handicap for a 477.

The Magnolia Lady Blue Eagles took advantage of hosting their own tournament to pick up quality wins in the Ludewig Insurance invitational, Saturday, April 5, at New Martinsville’s Hassig Fields.
