OVAC Soccer Classic
On May 4 at Steubenville’s Harding Stadium the annual OVAC Soccer All-Star Classic will get underway with several athletes representing Wetzel and Tyler County schools. From Magnolia High School will be Alicia Coleman, Mehdi Boumezrag, and Derek Dunn, while Kimberly Headley will representing Tyler Consolidated.
The boys’ game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the girls’ contest will follow 30 minutes after the end of the boys’ game.
Hornets’ Basketball Team
The Hundred Hornets played in a summer league basketball tournament in Morgantown last weekend and emerged with the championship.
The Hornets defeated South Harrison in the opener, 54-35, and moved on to challenge University High School, which prevailed 49-43. Now in the losers bracket, Hundred was paired with Morgantown High School, which had to forfeit because of other commitments.
That left Hundred to face the top seeded Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees in the quarterfinals, which they won, 54-48, to advance them to a meeting with University High School in the title match.
Hundred showed the many fans in Morgantown that a small school in Wetzel County can play basketball and beat University, 54-49. Helping secure the 54-49 victory were Corey Kimble, Emery Smith, Danny DeVaul, Zach Phillips, Logan McDiffitt, Tyrell Watson, Brenden Chizzler, Jesse Gorby, and Mitch Moore.
Paden City Alumni Golf
Plans are made for the annual Paden City Alumni Golf Tournament which will be held July 5 at the Sistersville Country Club starting at 8 a.m with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.
New this year will be a standing Paden City Alumni Cup which will be placed at the Paden City Museum with a plaque honoring the winning team each year.
This year there will be prizes awarded including two amusement park passes to each member of the winning team.
Teams will be set up with five members each with the cut-off number 60. Cost per person is $30 dollars, which includes golf cart.
Deadline is June 15 for alumni members and after that time will be open to the public.

Hunting Turkeys Over Bait Illegal In West Virginia
Citations for illegal baiting for turkeys, before and during the annual spring gobbler season, may be on the increase this year, according to Col. David Murphy, law enforcement section chief of the West Virginia Division of National Resources.
West Virginia law prohibits hunting, trapping or taking turkey by the aid of baiting, on or over any baited area. A baited area shall remain a baited area for 10 days following complete removal of all the baited materials.
The penalty for conviction of illegal baiting of wild turkey is a $20-$300 fine and/or 10-100 days in jail, plus $160.50 in court costs.
The West Virginia spring gobbler season is April 28–May 24 in all counties. Hunting regulations are available at all hunting license agents or online at
